The Social Security Administration typically will send claimants for a consultative examination when processing the initial application. While these examinations are typically cursory, and are not considered persuasive by most judges, it is important to take certain precautions and know what yo are walking in to.
These examinations are conducted by an independent contractor hired by SSA to perform these examinations, and the appointment notices are often sent to the claimants directly without our knowledge and with very little notice.
If you are scheduled for an independent medical exam in connection with your SSD application, it is essential that you contact our office so that we can prepare you before going in. If you do receive an appointment notice from Industrial Medical Associates (the contractor hired by SSA to perform these examinations in New York), please contact our office immediately at (212) 766-5800.
